News Report: Philippe Clement called out by reporter for comment made at press conference

Presenter Peter Martin joked Rangers boss Philippe Clement must avoid making comments that “can be misconstrued” by the media after referencing Harry Potter in his press conference.

Former Club Brugge and Monaco boss Clement was appointed last weekend and is preparing for his first game in charge against Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday (21 October).

Speaking to the assembled press on Friday (20 October), Clement said he is “not Harry Potter with the magic stick who can change everything suddenly

When listening back to those comments on PZL Soccer’s The Football Show on Friday (20 October), Martin laughed and said: “He has to avoid anything that can be misconstrued.

“I can see the Harry Potter hat and everything tomorrow, Hagrid by his side – you just cannot do that.

Pundit Lee McCullough added: “It’s a bit of lack of experience there on the Scottish media.

Clement’s Harry Potter quote was the standout line from his first pre-match presser, said in response to a question about how quickly he expects to turn things around at Ibrox.

It was a light-hearted comment from the Belgian that effectively means we cannot expect him to change things overnight.

Martin was laughing when he made his “cannot do that” comment, but there is of course an element of truth to what he said.

The Scottish press will no doubt jump on that snippet from the press conference and mock up images of Clement as Harry Potter at some stage.

In the Glasgow bubble, managers have to be careful about every last word they say – in jest or otherwise – or else it will come back around to haunt them.

While he may not be Harry Potter, Gers fans will just be hoping Clement gets off to a magic start when Hibernian visit Ibrox.
