Guard Kevin Porter Jr. was not the only player the Rockets traded to the Thunder in the mutually agreed-upon deal.
They sign veteran guard Victor Oladipo and young forward/center Jeremiah Robinson-Earl while forgoing Porter’s $16.9 million contract, which the Thunder will pay after dismissing him.
Additionally, as part of the agreement, Houston will establish a $4.5 million trade exception, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
Trade exceptions can be used to sign a player or land another player. Oftentimes, they’re not used at all, expiring after a year to the day of the original trade.
So the Rockets will have a little extra money available by ridding themselves of Porter’s contract.
As we relayed here, they are likely to keep Oladipo, who is on an expiring $9.5 million contract. It’s the type of contract that could make Oladipo a trade chip before the February trade deadline.
