Leeds have demanded the “strongest possible punishment” for Everton if they are found guilty of violating financial rules, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper reported in its print edition (26 October, back page) that after the Toffees registered a “staggering” £372million worth of losses across three years, £250million above the Premier League’s limit, and could face a 12-point points reduction.
Everton have denied the claims and sanctions may not be imposed this season, but the league are pushing for an extreme punishment for the Toffees.
While any potential sanction will be very tough for Everton to take amid their continuing financial a woes, Leeds are within their rights to demand justice.
Per the Daily Mail (3 October), Leeds, along with Burnley and Leicester City, remain eager to sue Everton for £300million if they are found guilty to cover the lost Premier League revenue after their relegation.
If Everton have spent money unfairly and thus benefitted at the expense of Leeds, then the club’s fury will be justified. The last thing Everton need at the moment is to be judged guilty. Their potential new owner, 777 Partners, have caused some controversy while performances on the pitch have not been great either.
While unfortunate for the Goodison Park faithful, it’s of little concern to Leeds fans, who no doubt would want their Premier League status back if it was unfairly taken from them.
A 12-point deduction could be enough to see Everton relegated whenever it is imposed, so the Toffees may be in the Championship soon enough.
