The 2023/24 Premier League season is well underway, and for Liverpool it’s been a solid start to the new campaign.
The Reds will make the journey to St James’ Park on Sunday (16:30 kick off UK time) as they take on Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United team, which is coming off a 1-0 defeat to last season’s treble winners, Manchester City.
The Magpies have Champions League football on the agenda this season, with Liverpool missing out following a disappointing year last time out which saw them finish in fifth, just behind Newcastle in fourth. That was enough to secure a Europa League spot for the current campaign.
However, with a solid draw against Chelsea on the opening day and an impressive 3-1 victory with ten men against Bournemouth last weekend, Liverpool has a made statement of intent to kickstart the new season and will look to build on this against Newcastle this weekend.
Here at Liverpool.com, we try to keep you up to date on the latest injury news from both camps ahead of every game. Here’s how things are shaping up for Jürgen Klopp’s side ahead of the Reds’ trip to St James’ Park.
Luis Díaz
Luis Díaz left the field in the 86th minute against Bournemouth, having levelled the score-line in the first half with an acrobatic effort to fire his side back into the fixture.
Speaking after the game on Díaz’s situation, Klopp said: “Top class, very good in shape but the second half was tough for him, being part of this new midfield was really hard for him, we could see that.”
The Colombian winger has since been pictured in training (Tuesday, August 22) and looks like he’ll be available for selection against Newcastle.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
In a similar manner to Díaz, Liverpool’s new vice-captain Alexander-Arnold left the pitch due to an injury suffered against the Cherries last weekend.
When asked by the press about the severity of the injury, after the 24-year-old was pictured with an ice-pack around his ankle, Klopp said: “I hope so [that he’ll be okay]. He told me he had a kick which was pretty painful but as far as a twist or fall, it was a kick. That’s why we changed then but I hope he will be fine.”
The right-back has since been pictured in full training, with the knock seemingly not a serious one.
Curtis Jones
The 22-year-old midfielder missed the Bournemouth clash due to an injury to his ankle. The setback was initially thought to only be a minor one heading into game three of the Premier League season.
However, Jones has not been pictured in first team training and therefore looks as though he might miss out on the match-day squad against the Magpies. Klopp will give a full update on this and the other injury doubts at his press conference, which you can keep up to date with across Liverpool.com and Blood Red on YouTube.
Thiago Alcântara
Jürgen Klopp has previously played down the Spanish midfielder’s chances of an imminent return following a hip injury, with the Liverpool boss claiming he ‘would not be there yet’ ahead of the clash with Bournemouth.
The 32-year-old required surgery to fix the issue prior to the 2023/24 campaign and missed all of the Reds’ pre-season preparations. However, he has since returned to first team training, with Klopp claiming he is ‘really close’ to becoming available.
