Leeds United are reportedly ready to open contract talks with Willy Gnonto to put an end to the speculation still linking him with a move away.
The Whites did well to see off summer interest in Willy Gnonto over the summer, with the player and his agent making it very clear that they wanted a move back to the top flight.
Leeds dug their heels in and now can look ahead to the Italian performing well in the Championship on a regular basis with little to worry about for the time being.
Football Insider have added to this by reporting that the club are now looking to open contract talks with the youngster to extend his deal at the club.
Gnonto’s current deal runs until 2027 after joining in 2022, and the club might be looking to offer him improved terms to sign.
Here, we look at two reasons why a new deal would be huge news for Leeds and Daniel Farke…
A move away becomes absurdly priced
Leeds’ stance in the summer was that Gnonto was not for sale, and the main club testing the waters were Everton – who never stood a chance of stumping up the right money.
That is, even if there was an ‘asking price’ for Leeds to consider.
Now, though, him agreeing to a new deal would mean that we are in an even stronger position to ask for a very high fee.
Southampton proved that the relegated clubs have more power than ever to ask for their valuation, and Gnonto would follow
The report also points out that Gnonto is firmly focused on pushing for promotion in a Leeds shirt, which is music to Farke’s ears.
We have some of the best attacking talent in the Championship, and having Gnonto firing on all cylinders would be huge for us going forward.
A new deal just confirms that he has put that controversial August behind him and is ready to show his commitment to the club once again.
