The long-term status of Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood will require decisions, as Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has acknowledged. However, this will take time.
The Boro manager revealed his delight at having Greenwood at the club and was full of praise for how he has performed so far, but played down talk of a permanent move materializing just yet.
This happens soon after The Athletic [October 8] revealed that Greenwood’s contract included a buyout option that could allow Middlesbrough to extend his contract with him permanently for a sum of £1.5 million.
In an interview with Teesside Live, which was published on November 7, Carrick responded, “Time will tell on that,” when asked if a permanent relocation was planned. We’re happy to have him,, and he’s working well for us right now.
In due course, decisions will need to be made, but for now, it’s all about his performances, and I couldn’t ask for more from him.
“Sam has excelled and made a significant contribution in a number of ways. He’s of of high caliber and provides a lot of value on the ball. He provides us a lot, both in terms of his adaptability and how hard he works without possession while using aggression.
This move is probable given the modest cost of the release clause in his loan agreement, his performances under Carrick thus far this season, and the likelihood that he won’t be able to find a spot in Elland Road’s first team.
Carrick’s remarks, which express his satisfaction with Greenwood’s early performances and his assertion that he has already become comfortable in the Middlesbrough dressing room, lend credence to the idea that the forward sees Teesside as his long-term home.
