If the New York Mets wish to retain ace slugger Pete Alonso, they will need to offer a huge salary. Alonso has grown into one of baseball’s top sluggers in addition to being a beloved player in New York. There doesn’t appear to be going to be a contract extension before the 29-year-old becomes a free agency at the end of the 2024 season. Though it doesn’t seem likely, there has been a lot of conjecture over the potential for an extension. But according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, that doesn’t mean Alonso won’t be with the Mets for a while.
“Don’t hold your breath for one of those increasingly rare spring mega-signings involving Pete Alonso,” warned Heyman. It is highly likely that he will become free agency following the 2024 season. That does not imply that he is lost. He just probably likes to have options available to him.” Throughout his five-year big league career, Alonso, a three-time All-Star, has led the National League in RBIs and home runs at various points. In 154 games played last season, he hit 46 home runs and drove in 118 runs, shining with New York.
The Mets would suffer greatly on the field and in terms of public relations if they lost someone like Alonso. He is a key member of the team and a homegrown talent. Players like him sign big contracts. And Alonso won’t be either. At this point, the only unanswered question is whether New York is prepared to bear the cost.
