NEWS UPDATE: Returned to New York officially, former Mets player

José Reyes spent the first half of his career with the New York Mets as one of the game’s most exciting players. Even though it went against his preferences, the homegrown four-time All-Star retired in New York when the Mets let him go following his greatest season in 2011.

Reyes did not finish his career with the Marlins despite being assured that he would, and former Marlins president David Samson admitted as much to the “Foul Territory” team on Monday. “It was all my responsibility.”

According to Samson, Reyes signed a six-year, $102 million contract with the Marlins, with a seven-year option at $22 million. Here’s what happened to Reyes:

♠ The Marlins were increasing their salary as they prepared to move into LoanDepot Park in 2012. They spent $191 million that offseason adding pitchers Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell in addition to Reyes.

Samson stated, “We met Jose Reyes at 12:01 a.m., which is the first time you can meet with free agents.”

♦ Reyes’ representatives informed Samson and the Marlins management that Reyes “loves Miami” and that all it will take for him to sign a contract is $1 more than any other suitor, ideally for $100 million.

According to Samson, the Marlins thought they were “creating a juggernaut” and that their 2012 victory would boost attendance.

But then the worst occurred…

♠ “It was a nightmare,” Samson remarked as the squad coped with manager Ozzie Guillen’s suspension, Bell’s missed saves, and a 69-93 record that showed a lot of losses.

♠ After a dreadful season, the Blue Jays acquired Reyes, Josh Johnson, and Buehrle in exchange for Yunel Escobar, Henderson Alvarez III, and five other players in an 11-player blockbuster on November 19, 2012.

Samson disclosed that Buehrle has not communicated with him following the transfer; nonetheless, years later, he and Reyes bonded during the World Baseball Classic.

“Whatever (ex-owner) Jeffrey (Lloria) promised you about being in Miami forever…,” Samson claimed he told Reyes. I had no idea we were going to move you to Toronto; all I knew was that you had to be aware that you would be traded if you did not receive the desired no-trade clause.
