Last season the Whites were demoted from the Premier League to the Championship a significant disappointment after three years in the top level. Unsurprisingly, many high-earners left the club, including playmakers Rodrigo and Jack Harrison, albeit the latter is currently on loan, and it was critical for new faces to come in.
Leeds made sure that happened with several strong additions, including Joel Piroe from Swansea City and Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea, and they are currently sitting nicely in third place in the Championship.
There were a handful of players who the Whites ultimately missed out on throughout the summer, including Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri, who was poised to join Leeds but backed out at the last minute.
Amiri now wants to leave Leverkusen and might join Leeds, according to a new report from Kicker [via Sport Witness], with the 27-year-old pushing for a move away from his present club.
According to the article, he is “aiming for a move” in the January transfer window, six months before his current Leverkusen contract expires, as he makes a “new attempt” to depart rather than letting his contract expire. The Bundesliga club is willing to let him go if a “reasonable offer” is made, since manager Xabi Alonso does not regard him as a vital part of his plans.
Leeds were desperate to recruit Amiri in the summer for a reason, therefore the chance to do so in January is something Amiri’s records for his Bundesliga club reflect this, with 32 goal contributions (12 goals and 20 assists) coming his way in 140 appearances, not to add five caps for Germany, which is no small feat given the strength of their roster.
While this update does not expressly state that Leeds have renewed their interest in the offensive midfielder, it would be surprising if they did not come back in for him in January, given their previous interest in him.
Amiri could be the ideal man to come in and add some attacking quality to Daniel Farke’s squad at a time when the Whites are still hoping to be in the automatic promotion race, using his experience and class to help Leeds cross the finish line and return to the Premier League quickly.
