The New York Mets have solidified their pitching rotation by re-signing left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea to a three-year, $75 million contract. This agreement, finalized on December 27, 2024, ensures that Manaea, a pivotal figure in the Mets’ recent success, will continue to contribute significantly in the coming seasons.
Manaea, who turns 33 on February 1, 2025, joined the Mets in January 2024 on a two-year, $28 million deal, which included an opt-out clause after the first year. Following an impressive 2024 season, he exercised this opt-out, becoming a free agent. The Mets extended a qualifying offer, which Manaea declined, leading to negotiations that culminated in the current three-year contract.
In the 2024 season, Manaea achieved a career-high 12 wins, posting a 12-6 record with a 3.47 ERA over 32 starts. He pitched 181⅔ innings and recorded 184 strikeouts, showcasing his durability and effectiveness on the mound. His performance was particularly notable in the latter half of the season; after adjusting his arm angle, he led the majors in innings pitched and ranked second in quality starts from July 1 onward.
Manaea’s impact extended beyond his on-field performance. He emerged as a clubhouse leader, fostering team camaraderie through various morale-boosting activities. Notably, he initiated rituals such as painting the starting pitcher’s number in eye black and organizing team celebrations after successful outings, which contributed to a positive team culture.
The Mets’ president of baseball operations, David Stearns, expressed enthusiasm about Manaea’s return, stating, “Sean was an integral part of what the team accomplished last season. He impressed on the field leading the rotation and in the clubhouse with his character, attitude, and composure. I am excited to watch him continue to flourish over the next few …
Manaea’s re-signing is a strategic move for the Mets, who have been active in the offseason to bolster their roster. In addition to Manaea, the team has made significant acquisitions, including signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract. These moves reflect the organization’s commitment to building a competitive team with a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent.
Looking ahead, Manaea is expected to play a leading role in the Mets’ starting rotation for the 2025 season. The projected rotation includes right-handers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, both recent acquisitions, as well as incumbents Kodai Senga and David Peterson. This assembly of pitchers offers a mix of depth, potential, and experience, positioning the Mets for a strong campaign in the upcoming season.
Manaea’s journey to this point has been marked by resilience and growth. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2013, he overcame early-career injuries to establish himself as a reliable starter in the major leagues. His tenure with teams like the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants provided him with valuable experience, culminating in his standout performances with the Mets.
