Joe Gomez could reportedly fill in at right-back depending on the severity of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s latest injury setback.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the 26-year-old defender could return to the right-sided fullback position if Alexander-Arnold’s injury proves to be worse than first feared.
The England international was forced to come off on the 71st minute after picking up a suspect hamstring problem, with Gomez filling in at right-back for the remainder of the match.
And the centre-back could start for Liverpool in the right-back position when the international break ends, with Alexander-Arnold’s injury yet to be fully diagnosed.
Hailed by Jurgen Klopp for his ‘super-special’ performance against Newcastle United, Gomez has impressed for Liverpool this season having endured a nightmare year last term
Not many Liverpool fans would have predicted Gomez to be as good as he has this season, and the defender could be an ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold if the defender is out through injury.
The former Charlton Athletic star has been one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers in the last two games, and a return to right-back could suit Gomez with no other options out there in the squad.
With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate also expected to be back for Liverpool, the change could be a needed one, with Gomez more than good enough to replace Alexander-Arnold at right-back.
