New York Giants legend and current football analyst Tiki Barber never played baseball at the highest level but knows a thing or two about how members of a roster can turn on each other and on higher-ups within an organization.
During Friday’s edition of the WFAN afternoon show (that simulcasts on the television home of the New York Mets), Barber warned Mets owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns regarding how they should approach the July 30 MLB trade deadline with the club in possession of a National League wild-card playoff spot.
Specifically, Barber was referencing how outfielder Brandon Nimmo publicly challenged Cohen and Stearns to make “additions” and “be buyers at the end of this month” both before and after the Mets acquired right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays. A New York team believed by many in June to be a postseason afterthought ultimately won five of six games to enter the All-Star break at 49-46, and there’s now no indication that Cohen will let Stearns trade out-of-contract first baseman Pete Alonso before July 30.
With that said, Mike Puma of the New York Post raised eyebrows when he wrote for an article published on Thursday evening that “the Maton deal, in which the Mets absorbed the $2.75M remaining on his contract — in addition to a player to be named later or cash considerations — should serve as a model for the type of trades Stearns can still look to orchestrate.” The suggestion, fair or not, is that Cohen won’t go all-in on chasing postseason glory this year regardless of how the Mets play beginning with the four-game series at the Miami Marlins (33-63) that gets underway on Friday.
The Mets then face the New York Yankees (58-40) twice before they host the Atlanta Braves (53-42) for a four-game tilt.
“I think it has a lot to do with these next two series and how they perform,” Barber said about the Mets’ trade deadline plans. “If they come out and take care of business in this upcoming series against the Marlins, then you’re gonna start feeling really good about where they are and what they need to do. If they falter and they get into the next couple series and falter again, then you start worrying about the trade deadline going the other way.”
Mets team leaders such as shortstop Francisco Lindor have routinely discussed the “good vibes” associated with the team this summer after the Amazins allegedly dealt with clubhouse issues across the first half of the 2023 season. Cohen and Stearns failing to bolster the squad with even one major acquisition theoretically could eliminate such vibes and maybe even sink the Mets’ playoff hopes following their unexpected resurgence.

For a couple of reasons, the Braves are two weeks away from having a much different look. On the injury front, Michael Harris II is set to return following the All-Star break. That will be a massive boost, and the trade deadline also offers an opportunity for Atlanta to better themselves, just like it did back in 2021. Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos is always wheeling and dealing, and that won’t change this time; the expectation is that Atlanta will be as active as any club on the market because of its offensive holes. The outfield needs the most help in terms of bodies, but shortstop might be the weakest link for the position players. The pitching staff could be bolstered as well. Given how cheap relief help can be at the deadline, Anthopoulos could strengthen an already stout bullpen, and an extra starting pitcher would give the Braves much-needed insurance in case one of their top horses were to go down over the second half of the season. Anthopoulos has taken an interesting approach in the past: filling future needs before they become apparent. He could do the same thing at the 2024 deadline to address future roster holes that could appear in 2025. For instance, while Kenley Jansen was on the team, the Braves acquired Raisel Iglesias, who had multiple years left on his contract. Jansen left in free agency, and Iglesias bumped into the closer’s role. Similarly, Atlanta traded for Pierce Johnson and Joe Jimenez, who were on expiring deals but were given new deals the following offseason. The Braves have needs to fill in 2024, but a couple of them will exist in 2025 as well, namely the outfield. With Ronald Acuna Jr. on the shelf with another ACL injury, Anthopoulos must work some magic. Acuna could be relegated to a DH role to protect his knee, which Marcell Ozuna currently occupies. At the minimum, the Braves will likely need another starter to pair with Michael Harris II and Jarred Kelenic in 2025. Anthopoulos might prefer an outfielder with multiple years of control at this year’s trade deadline. The starting rotation might be even more dire of a situation when talking about the future. The current crop of starters is more than enough to propel the Braves to a World Series if injuries don’t arise. However, with Max Fried‘s free agency and Charlie Morton‘s looming retirement, it will be at the top of Anthopoulos’ to-do list in the offseason. I didn’t even mention Spencer Strider returning from injury, either. The bullpen is probably the strongest unit on the team, so it would be strengthening a strength if Anthopoulos were to acquire another reliever at the deadline. With that being said, AJ Minter is set to hit free agency and has been Atlanta’s most reliable reliever since 2021. Orlando Arcia also cannot be the Braves starting shortstop heading into 2025. So, whether they address it now or in the offseason, that must happen before the start of next season. The Braves’ focus will be on 2024, but it would be ideal if Anthopoulos could kill two birds with one stone at this year’s deadline.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in dire need of another wide receiver, and the New York Giants may have the answer for them. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has listed Giants receiver Darius Slayton among the most likely players to be dealt heading into training camp, and he has named the Steelers as one of the top potential landing spots for the veteran. Slayton is seeking a new deal from New York, but the two sides have not been able to agree on anything. With the Giants drafting Malik Nabers and also having young wide outs like Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson, Slayton could become expendable. In that scenario, Pittsburgh would absolutely represent a viable trade destination given the fact that it has no proven receiving talent behind George Pickens. Right now, the Steelers’ No. 2 receiver spot is up for grabs. Third-round draft pick Roman Wilson may have the inside edge, but Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson are also candidates to win the job. Not exactly an embarrassment of riches for Russell Wilson. Darius Slayton has been a steady contributor for the Giants No one is going to confuse Slayton for a No. 1 receiver, but he has been a steady contributor for the Giants ever since they took him in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Slayton was a pleasant surprise right off the bat, catching 48 passes for 740 yards and eight touchdowns during his rookie campaign. Aside from 2021, when he missed four games due to injury and logged just 26 catches for 339 yards and a couple of scores, Slayton has registered over 700 yards each season, although he has never reached 800. The 27-year-old topped out at 770 yards this past year, hauling in 50 receptions and reaching the end zone four times. The Steelers made the playoffs last season with Pickens and Diontae Johnson as their top two receivers. Pittsburgh traded Johnson to the Carolina Panthers earlier in the spring, leaving a rather massive void behind Pickens on the depth chart. There has been rampant speculation that the Steelers could trade for San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk, but Aiyuk seems unlikely to be dealt, and that isn’t really Pittsburgh’s modus operandi, anyway. If the Giants do end up placing Slayton on the trade block, perhaps the Steelers will place a call to Big Blue. Knox projects that it would take a 2025 fifth-round draft pick to pry Slayton away from New York, which would seem like a small price to pay for Pittsburgh.

After spending the last five years of his career with the Orlando Magic, guard Markelle Fultz is currently a free agent. And according to recent reports, it seems unlikely he will return to the franchise this summer. Per HoopsWire’s Sam Amico, it is “doubtful” that the Magic will bring Fultz back. Amico also mentions that a reunion is especially unlikely after the team added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope earlier this offseason. Fultz began his career with the Philadelphia 76ers after the team drafted him with the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. However, after a disappointing two-season stint with the 76ers, the team traded Fultz to Orlando in February 2019. In five seasons with the Magic, Fultz appeared in 201 games, averaging 11.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. The 2022-23 season was Fultz’s best as an pro. Fultz averaged 14 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Additionally, he shot 51.4 percent from the field and 31 percent from beyond the arc. All these numbers were career highs for Fultz. However, last season was a disappointment for the Maryland native, as he averaged 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Fultz has not lived up to his draft stock and likely never will. Still, he has shown throughout his Magic tenure that he can contribute to a team in the league. Fultz is a very athletic guard who can impact the game on both sides of the court. He may never become a consistently great three-point shooter, but he can still provide enough scoring to negate this. It is currently unknown what teams may have interest in signing the 26-year-old. However, any team looking for guard depth should look Fultz’s way this summer.

Russell Westbrook has been traded for the fifth time in the last five years, and for the second time in the last 17 months, he was temporarily acquired by the Utah Jazz on Thursday. Thanks to another contract buyout in the Beehive State though, the former MVP, again, won’t be suiting up for the Jazz. After being selected by the now-defunct Seattle SuperSonics with the fourth overall pick in 2008, Westbrook spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Westbrook earned eight of his nine All-Star honors with the Thunder, won the 2016-17 MVP award, led the league in both assists and scoring twice and appeared in one NBA Finals. Since being traded to the Houston Rockets on July 16, 2019, in a deal that included future Hall-of-Fame point guard Chris Paul, the UCLA product has played for four teams, and the Denver Nuggets would make it five. Westbrook reunited with fellow former MVP guard James Harden in Houston but lasted just one season with the organization. Westbrook was sent to the Washington Wizards on December 2, 2020, for a package that included five-time All-Star point guard John Wall. The NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles played just one year in the nation’s capital, leading the league in assists per game for a third time (career high 11.7). Westbrook was moved to the Los Angeles Lakers in a monster five-team blockbuster on August 6, 2021, and played with LeBron James for one-and-a-half seasons. The 35-year-old’s most recent trade before Thursday saw him initially land with the Utah Jazz on February 9, 2023, before he was waived 11 days later before appearing in a game.
