Officially Done: Rumors in MLB: Two former All-Star free agents have officially accepted the New York Mets as their backup team.

The New York Mets want to recover from an underwhelming 2023 campaign and close the gap in the NL East. Nevertheless, two previous All-Star free agents have hindered the Mets in their quest.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, New York came in second to Los Angeles in the free agency chase of Julio Teheran and Aroldis Chapman. While Teheran signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles, Chapman did so with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pittsburgh prevailed with a $10.5 million contract, while the Mets made Chapman an offer in the $8 million level. It was unclear what New York was offering Teheran. In the event that he decides to opt out of his Orioles contract, the team will still be keeping an eye on this pitcher.

It is evident that the Mets are attempting to bolster both their bullpen and rotation, even if neither player is a blockbuster signing at this point in their careers. At the trade deadline, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer were moved, leaving New York’s starting rotation severely lacking in offensive punch. especially considering that Kodai Senga was injured before to Opening Day.
In 2024, Edwin Diaz will return to the ninth inning for the Mets. But Chapman would, at minimum.
