Officially, Key Chiefs Coach Acquires Automatic Promotion after establishing himself as one of the league’s most formidable forces

Over the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs have proven to be a strong force in the National Football League, and they are currently on their fourth consecutive Super Bowl run.

Not long after the 2024 Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs may lose an important member of their coaching staff.

Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach for the Chiefs, is reportedly a candidate for “several” defensive coordinator positions, including those with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, and Michigan, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones on February 4.

Since 2006, Cullen has coached in the NFL. He was the defensive line coach of the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Baltimore Ravens in his first 14 years in the NFL.

Cullen joined Jacksonville in 2021 as a defensive coordinator for head coach Urban Meyer. But after just one season, he lost his job, and in 2022, he became a member of Kansas City’s coaching staff.

Cullen’s move to Kansas City and defensive tackle Chris Jones’s consecutive All-Pro seasons—the latter two being Jones’s career’s first two All-Pro selections—occurred for a reason. Second-year defensive end George Karlaftis, who had a strong rookie season but followed it with an even better year 2 (64 total pressures, 11 sacks, 24 stops, per PFF), is testament to Cullen’s ability to bring out the best in his players.
