The New York Mets made it quite apparent early in the winter that a contract extension for Pete Alonso was not a realistic possibility, so they decided against pursuing one this offseason. The All-Star first baseman’s appearance in MLB trade rumours has made it more clear why the two parties were unable to come to an agreement.

There was an attempt by New York to extend Alonso’s contract. The Mets presented Alonso with a seven-year contract worth more than $150 million, as was previously reported. He wouldn’t have been among the top paid MLB players as a result of the agreement, but he would have had one of the highest average yearly earnings among first basemen. The offer was ultimately turned down, and months later Alonso’s name surfaced in MLB rumours.
Although there were extensive discussions with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Mets were never able to come to an agreement on a deal for Alonso. A year later, Alonso’s name is being mentioned in MLB trade rumours by New York once more, and there’s a good probability he’s transferred and that an extension is no longer on the table.

No first baseman in MLB has a deal worth more than $182 million per season as of the 2024 campaign, according to Spotrac. There are just two first basemen signed to agreements of $160 million or more, Freddie Freeman and Matt Olson, with the exception of Kris Bryant, who has one of the worst MLB contracts at the moment with the Colorado Rockies.

Only one player at that position (Nick Castellanos, $100 million) outside of Shohei Ohtani is signed to a deal worth $100 million or more each season, if Alonso’s agency is intending to market him to teams as a designated hitter.
