NEW YORK When play abruptly stopped in the fifth inning of Shea Stadium that night in 1997, Butch Huskey was largely oblivious of what was about to unfold. Jackie Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson, entered the field escorted by Major League Commissioner Bud Selig and President Bill Clinton.

 

Those three declared that Robinson’s No. 42 would be retired across Major League Baseball in the middle of an otherwise typical baseball game.

While all of this was going on, Huskey muttered, “I’m probably not going to be able to wear this number anymore,” to someone in the dugout.
