One of the Miami Heat’s weaknesses this season is their lack of depth in the backcourt. Despite this, Miami has amassed a 10-5 record entering Friday’s game against the New York Knicks.
A potential solution for this problem is signing a veteran guard in free agency. Veteran John Wall should sit at the top of Miami’s targets.
Wall most recently spent 34 games with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists on 40.8 percent shooting. In February, he was traded to the Houston Rockets. Houston waived the former All-Star shortly after.
During his peak with the Washington Wizards, Wall was one of the league’s most electric players. He was named a five-time All-Star, averaging 23.1 points in his best year.
Between point guards Kyle Lowry and Dru Smith, playmaking and scrapiness are not problems. Rather, explosiveness on the offensive end is what the duo lacks.
Although Wall does not have the same athleticism as his former self, he could contribute to Miami’s system. Off the bench, Wall’s finishing and solid defense are missing factors that are key down the stretch. Not to mention, the Heat would likely sign him to a cheap one-year contract.
However, Kyle Lowry’s 28-point showcase against the Cleveland Cavaliers is pushing concern away from the backcourt. But if their troubles continue, Miami should consider signing the former superstar guard.
