Catcher Tyler Heineman is currently headed to the Boston Red Sox after being designated for assignment by the New York Mets and waived by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets announced on Friday afternoon that catcher Tyler Heineman had been traded for cash considerations.
Two months after acquiring Heineman off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, New York designated him for assignment on Tuesday.
Max Castillo, a right-handed pitcher, has been designated for assignment by the Red Sox in order to create space on their 40-man roster for Heineman.
Over the years, Heineman has played for a number of teams, beginning with the Houston Astros, who selected him in the 2012 UCLA draft. Every year since the Milwaukee Brewers acquired his contract in 2017, Heineman has been with a different team.
The catcher played for the Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Brewers from 2017 to 2021. However, he only made five MLB appearances with the Marlins and fifteen with the Giants during that time. In 2022, Heineman made his way back to the major leagues. He played in ten games for the Blue Jays before being claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Heineman finished that season with 52 games played for Pittsburgh in addition to three more games in the early months of 2023. Heineman was traded back to the Blue Jays in April, and he spent the entire season playing in Toronto.
Heineman has hit.218 in 104 career games with 15 RBI, one home run, a.579 OPS, and 0.5 WAR. With just 0.8 defensive WAR and five defensive runs saved in his meager MLB experience, the 32-year-old is a defensive specialist behind the plate.
In 689 career Triple-A games, Heineman has a.276 batting average and a.752 OPS. That is his minor league record.
As in 2023, Boston was expected to start 2024 with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire in a platoon at catcher. Heineman gives the Red Sox another backup option in case McGuire’s injuries recur this season. McGuire missed significant time of last season due to injuries.
