REAL DEAL: Young Francisco Álvarez of the Mets officially signs a new contract deal

On Tuesday, the New York Mets received some unfavorable news; however, on Wednesday, encouraging news broke.

During a dismal 2023 season, one of the team’s bright spots was catcher Francisco Álvarez. In 2023, he performed about as well as a catcher could be expected to, finishing with a.208/.284/.439 line. Therefore, the report that he is reportedly considering a contract extension may be good news for Mets supporters.

Álvarez “is interested in discussing a long-term extension with the Mets,” according to MLB Trade Rumors. Tim Healy at Newsday provided the initial report

Arns expressed his hope that they will have “a number” of young, potential players, like Álvarez, with whom they can discuss contract extensions.

Major League Baseball has recently begun to extend young players. Even before they receive tenure, teams have signed players like Corbin Carroll, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Julio Rodriguez to long-term contracts. Watching the young guys get paid is always positive, and Álvarez might be the next in line.
