At receiver, the Cowboys had an embarrassing amount of wealth. Amari Cooper was a premier football route runner.
Frank Lampard was in the race and then out of the race, despite some backing from Graeme Souness.
Rangers ended up going for Philippe Clement and that decision is paying dividends with the Belgian unbeaten so far.
Others were linked though and one name seemed incredibly ambitious if Rangers really did make a move…
Rangers were linked with Julen Lopetegui
TEAMtalk reported just days after Beale’s departure that Rangers had made a move for Julen Lopetegui.
The Spaniard left Wolverhampton Wanderers in August and Rangers allegedly attempted a rather bold move.
Lopetegui, a former Real Madrid boss and Europa League winner with Sevilla, kept Wolves up last season and has been a prominent manager around Europe.
Al Ittihad now want Lopetegui
Spanish reporter Guillem Balague now claims that there is very ‘real’ interest from Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.
Nuno Espirito Santo – another former Wolves boss – was sacked earlier this week with Al Ittihad now eyeing a move for Lopetegui.
Balague claims that Lopetegui’s plan remains unchanged though; he wants to stay in England and await for an opportunity in the Premier league.
Balague adds that Lopetegui has rejected all offers outside of England, including Lyon and Villarreal with Rangers seemingly in that list too.
Maybe big money and the chance to coach N’Golo Kante and Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia can tempt Lopetegui, but Al Ittihad may well receive a similar answer to Rangers.
