According to local reports, Highsmith collided with a man who was assisting another driver stranded in the middle of the road.
The injured individual remains in critical condition following the accident, which has raised concerns about his recovery.
While Highsmith escaped the accident without significant injuries, he was ruled out of Wednesday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs for “personal reasons.”
The Heat organization expressed sympathy for those injured in the incident, stating, “our hearts go out to those who were injured.”
“We have been made aware that Highsmith was involved in a car accident heading home from last night’s game,” the Heat said in a statement.
“Our hearts go out to those who were injured. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Highsmith, a key contributor for the Heat this season, has been averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
The Heat organization has not provided further details about the accident, but Highsmith’s absence from Wednesday’s game and his status beyond remain uncertain.
