The 48-year-old coach was seething after a 1-0 loss to Lecce’s relegation rivals, storming onto the pitch at full-time and confronting Henry before butting his head towards the forward in shocking scenes.
D’Aversa was shown a red card for his actions – as was Henry – and Lecce promptly released a statement condemning their manager’s behaviour.
The club said they ‘strongly condemned the actions of our manager which are against our values and those of sport’.
Just a day after the event, Lecce moved to fire D’Aversa, and on Monday morning, the team officially announced his termination.
Following the events that transpired during Lecce’s match against Verona, Lecce has announced the resignation of coach Roberto D’Aversa.
“We appreciate the coach’s and his staff’s efforts.”
When questioned about what transpired later, D’Aversa stated that his actions were “inexcusable,” but he also stated that he was protecting his teammates from the opposition’s provocations.
“I entered the field to attempt to prevent my players from being dismissed because Verona was consistently provoking us in the closing moments of the game and following the conclusion of play,” D’Aversa stated to Sky Sports.
