This offseason, the New York Mets could use another significant addition, but it doesn’t appear like they will make a big trade to get it. Although it appears that New York is happy with its starting lineup as it stands, there have been rumors that the team was hoping to acquire ace Dylan Cease in a significant trade with the Chicago White Sox. Though rumors have been circulating, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports claims that New York isn’t talking about moving.
“Quit the gossip already,” stated Nightengale. “Trade negotiations between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Mets are not underway. They are preparing for 2025; there is no way in the world that they would give up valuable prospects.” Although Cease would be a huge addition to the Mets, it’s unlikely that the team can sign him in time for now. Although the team has made improvements this offseason, New York does not currently appear to be a World Series contender. There have been rumors that the Mets intended to focus entirely on their 2025 campaign instead of 2024. Although Cease is only signed for the next two seasons, and acquiring him would cost New York at least one or more seasons, it would provide the Mets with a top-of-the-rotation starter.
In order to establish a team that can consistently compete in the World Series, New York will need its best prospects to advance to the major leagues. The Mets don’t appear inclined to give up their future for immediate advantage.
