SKY NEWS: The Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has officially confirmed one former player as the team’s new head coach.

This is a very special season for the Dallas Cowboys. Not too long after defeating the Detroit Lions 20–19, the Cowboys are currently 11–5, well positioned to win the NFC East. With a victory over the Washington Commanders the following week, the Cowboys can secure the NFC East.

Despite this, owner Jerry Jones is unaffected and continues to consider the long term. He believes that one former player would make a fantastic head coach—possibly even for the Cowboys.

On December 27, ESPN’s Ed Werder shared a tweet on X (Twitter) that quoted a Dallas Morning News piece in which Jones likened Witten to Coach of the Year contender Dan Campbell: “The last quote from Jerry Jones in this article implies that he is thinking about hiring Jason Witten to lead the Cowboys in the future.

Of course, Mike McCarthy is the Cowboys’ current head coach and has a decent track record. He has a 41-25 record with the Cowboys heading into the final week of his fourth season as head coach. Dallas has gone 1-2 in the playoffs during that time, so he has yet to experience consistent success. McCarthy’s last obstacle with the Cowboys will be to get past that.

He spent 16 NFL seasons with the Cowboys and one with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he was selected to 11 Pro Bowls.

He is ranked fourth in all-time receptions with 1,228 catches for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns, making him one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

When he played, worked as an announcer, and led his son’s high school football team to a state championship, his passion for the game was evident.

Jerry Jones appears to have his sights set on a future head coach who leaves a lasting impression on the team, even though McCarthy appears to be in charge for the time being.
