Julio Teheran, a seasoned starter who was designated for assignment, was granted his freedom by the New York Mets on Thursday when he elected for free agency.
Teheran was given the option to sign with a minor-league club of the Mets or to become a free agent because he cleared the waiver system without being claimed. The 33-year-old decided to market his abilities.

After being signed by the Mets and starting him in their series opener against Atlanta on Monday, he doesn’t have much to work with.
Between 2011 and 2019, Teheran pitched with the Atlanta Braves, where he saw his best success. He won at least ten games in five different seasons, including back-to-back 14-win campaigns in 2013 and 2014. In 2014 and 2016, he was selected for the National League All-Star game.
Since then, he has played for three different teams: the Los Angeles Angels in 2020, the Detroit Tigers in 2021, and the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023. He participated in both the Mexican League and independent baseball in 2022.
