Sky news:Banned star Ezra Mam returns to training with Broncos

Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth, Ezra Mam, has resumed training with the team following a nine-game suspension imposed by the NRL. This disciplinary action stemmed from an October 18 incident in Brisbane, where Mam was involved in a head-on collision while driving without a license and under the influence of a combination of drugs, including cocaine.

In December, Mam pleaded guilty to charges of driving with a relevant drug present in his blood and driving without a license. The court fined him $850 and disqualified him from driving for six months, though no conviction was recorded. The NRL subsequently issued a breach notice, leading to his nine-game suspension.

The Broncos organization expressed significant disappointment in Mam’s actions. In addition to the NRL’s suspension, the club imposed a $90,000 fine and mandated that Mam complete a safe driving training program.

During his suspension, Mam has been proactive in his rehabilitation efforts. He voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program shortly after the incident and has been engaging in unpaid labor at a Brisbane construction site. These steps are part of his commitment to personal development and restitution.

Mam’s return to training is a positive development for the Broncos, who are preparing for the upcoming NRL season. Despite his participation in training sessions, he will not be eligible to play until Round 10, when the Broncos face South Sydney.

The incident has sparked discussions within the rugby league community regarding the adequacy of penalties for off-field misconduct. Some commentators have criticized the perceived leniency of Mam’s punishment, calling for stricter measures to uphold the sport’s integrity.

In response to the incident, Mam has publicly apologized to those affected, including the individuals involved in the accident, the NRL, the Broncos, fans, and his family. He has expressed remorse and a commitment to becoming a better person and role model.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Mam to see how he utilizes this second chance to rebuild his career and contribute positively to the Broncos’ campaign. The club and its supporters are hopeful that Mam’s return will bolster the team’s performance, provided he upholds the standards expected of a professional athlete both on and off the field.
