Mike Zimmer, the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, gave a press conference on Wednesday. These were the session’s five key lessons for us.
As Mike McCarthy listened in on Zimmer and discussed the team’s overall performance, it was a Double Mike type of situation. McCarthy had never before had the chance to sit in front of a camera and behind a microphone (why do we phrase things that way when they are in the same position?). even though it was a Zimmer-focused session, it was interesting to see what he had to say about a range of topics since the season-ending press conference.
Only a few questions were aimed directly at McCarthy, and one of them concerned a recent statement made by the team’s general manager. Jerry Jones announced a few weeks ago at the Senior Bowl that the Cowboys would go “all-in” for the 2024 campaign.
“I would expect that we will be fully committed, considering our important contracts that we would like to address in the future. I think at the end of this year, we’ll all be in. Thus, when you ask if there is any thought, we will ignore it completely.
Going all in on different people than you have in the past is what this will entail. We’re going to fully commit. We wish to fully commit to some of the players based on what we’ve seen from them. Indeed, I would say that we will not be building it for the future, but rather for this coming year. I’ve never said it better than this. And that should address many of the inquiries.
Jerry is aware of how this game operates and is not naive. He knows full well that a remark such as this will spark controversy and take a long time to quell. Just think about how many times you have probably talked about this concept with the people you usually talk to about football. The question on everyone’s mind is how truly “all-in” the Cowboys will be during the offseason.
As previously mentioned, McCarthy was questioned about it, with particular attention to how he understood the remark.
“For the company? Right now, all I’m trying to do is hire a coaching staff. Given that, I believe it goes without saying that we have had some excellent teams in recent years. We regret not having accomplished the ultimate objective. It’s just a matter of realizing, in my opinion, that it’s critical to start from the beginning with player acquisition. and having the new employees and the personnel guys in the same room the following week. And ensure that we simply remain focused and take the necessary actions to guarantee our victory. and developing that self-assurance as well as the actions you must take when it comes to the stretch. in the postseason and emerge victorious
To be honest, McCarthy talked about a lot of unspecific topics in the middle of his remarks, but he did touch on the importance of returning to the fundamentals and how “that starts with player acquisition.” Since McCarthy chose to specifically bring up player acquisition, it could be argued that he is stating his desire for the team to be active in free agency.
Michael Gehlken weighed in on the controversial comment earlier this week at The Dallas Morning News, speculating that it might end up meaning very little.
There is a genuine possibility. Turns out that “all in” is just talk.
Jones wasn’t the first to raise the two-word phrase, nor did he define it. When a reporter asked Jones if there was any thought given to being more present-minded, or less worried about potential salary-cap implications, when building the 2024 roster, including through free agency, he used this phrase.
“We’ll be all in, I would think, looking ahead at our key contracts that we’d like to address,” Jones stated. “By the end of this year, I think we’ll be all in.” We will therefore likely strain when you ask, “Is there any thought?” We’ll expel it completely.
McCarthy’s remarks regarding this may also mean nothing, but it is evident that these two terms are highly significant in the Dallas Cowboys’ world due to the potential for improvement they offer in terms of roster building. About a month remains until the start of free agency, and as Mike McCarthy once stated, it all begins with player acquisition. Will Jerry Jones and the Cowboys genuinely begin there?
We’ll have to hold off and see.
