Steve Cohen was offended by one fan’s response to the Mets’ announcement that they would form a dance squad.
This season, the Queens Crew, a 19-person coed dance squad, will provide entertainment for the fans at Citi Field before games and during commercial breaks.
In response to the news on Saturday, one X user—who happens to be a Yankees fan—said, “This is baseball. This isn’t the NBA or NFL.” “This game does not have a halftime. How is a dancing team necessary, in my opinion?
A few hours after the important post, he wrote, “Excellent point. “I forgot baseball is a serious sport in comparison to other sports.”
Local non-baseball examples include the Knicks and Nets, while MLB teams that have introduced dancing squads include the Braves, Astros, and Marlins.
The Queens Crew will walk through the aisles for more freestyle performances and perform in between innings, including during the seventh-inning stretch and T-shirt throws.
Having observed the conflicting responses from baseball enthusiasts, vice president of brand marketing Trisha Donlin thinks the performance will help persuade the critics.
Donlin told The Post’s Mark W. Sanchez, “Of course you’re going to have long-standing fans that don’t want change.” Donlin viewed Cohen’s social media post as a gesture of support. But because of the undeniable talent, we’re pretty hopeful that people will accept this. You become very sucked in by this team.
