Rangers are seeking a new manager and Kris Boyd is backing Yokohama F. Marinos boss Kevin Muscat for the job.
Michael Beale lost his job on Sunday night with Rangers pulling the plug on his time at Ibrox.
Beale lasted less than a year but few Rangers fans would suggest that the sacking was undeserved.
Beale was backed over the summer but just couldn’t bring results to Ibrox and the search is now on for his successor…
Kris Boyd backs Kevin Muscat for Rangers job
A host of names have already been mentioned for the job with Yokohama F. Marinos boss Kevin Muscat a prime contender.
Muscat is a former Rangers defender from his playing days and has impressed as a manager over in Japan.
The Australian’s Yokohama F. Marinos are once again in the running for the J1 League championship after winning it in 2022.
Kris Boyd, a former striker for Rangers, has since spoken his opinion, telling The Scottish Sun that Muscat ‘might suit the bill’.
Boyd seemed to believe that Muscat is the appropriate person for the role and believes that it is crucial for Rangers to hire “the right character.”
Given that Muscat’s contract is about to expire and that he is a strong
Whatever happens now, the Rangers board cannot afford to get it wrong and hiring the right character is vital,” said Boyd. “Kevin Muscat strikes me as someone who could fit the bill. He’s been linked with the job before and ticks a lot of boxes.”
“He’s out of contract at Yokohama when the Japanese J-League finishes in a few weeks so compensation wouldn’t be an issue,” he added.
Muscat reportedly keen on talks with Rangers
Rangers are still assessing options and putting together a shortlist to appoint Beale’s replacement, but Muscat seems to be a real option.
TalkSPORT claimed on Monday that Muscat is keen to speak to Rangers about a potential return to Ibrox.
The Daily Record then added that Muscat is shelving contract talks with Yokohama F. Marinos as he wants to facilitate a move to Rangers.
The 50-year-old has impressed in charge of Melbourne Victory and Yokohama F. Marinos but did have a less-than-ideal spell as manager of Sint-Truiden in Belgium.
It’s unclear whether Rangers see him as a top candidate or not but he does appear to be a name in the mix – something Boyd seems to support.
