Luke Fleurs was shot dead on 3 April, and he had not kicked a ball in a competitive match for Kaizer Chiefs at the time of his passing.
Fleurs was given the No. 26 jersey when he joined the Chiefs, but he was never able to don it during a formal game.
Although Fleurs had not yet made his Amakhosi debut, Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. stated that the late defender was scheduled to play last weekend against Chippa United.
The 24-year-old was allegedly trying to highjack something in Florida, Johannesburg, on April 3 when he was shot and killed.
In remembrance of Luke’s life and impact, the team has chosen to retire number 26. At Fleurs’ memorial service on Thursday, Kaizer Jr. declared, “No other player will ever wear the jersey number again.”
THREE JERSEY NUMBERS HAVE NOW BEEN RETIRED BY AMAKHOSI
The Chiefs have retired three jersey numbers as of this most recent development.
Doctor Khumalo’s No. 15, which he wore while playing, was the first jersey number to be retired.
The Chiefs retired the No. 20 jersey in October 2021 as a tribute to the legendary Howard Freese, who played a distinguished career for the team.
The Glamour Boys have now added Fleurs’ No. 26 jersey to the list as a token of respect and remembering.
