BBC NEWS: The Los Angeles Lakers and their top trade target are reportedly close to finalizing a new agreement.

Fans were hopeful that Rob Pelinka would be proactive and make a deal before the end of the month, since the Lakers are struggling this season and desperately need an offensive spark. However, it appears that the Lakers are losing the trade talks and are currently viewed as a long shot to capture their most wanted trade target of the season as January draws to a close and the deadline approaches.

“League sources say that there has been little-to-no trade dialogue in recent days between the Hawks and the Lakers when it comes to former All-Star Dejounte Murray,” Marc Stein reported. “Trade conversations tend to be fluid this time of year and can be easily fired up again, but one person briefed on the talks called the idea of Murray arriving with the Lakers before the deadline, as of coming Sunday, as “unrealistic.” One of the reasons for that is D’Angelo Russell’s impressive performance this month.”

In addition to being more reluctant to deal Russell, the Lakers are also displaying some vitality as a result of his recent performance. D’Lo has been playing pretty well lately, and the Lakers are seeing what life may be like if he can regularly make his shots thanks to his output. The Lakers could be better suited selling high before D’Angelo goes on another losing run, but there is still some residual mistrust with him.

The Lakers aren’t quite where they want to be at 24-23 in the current season. This squad was expected to finish in the top six in the West because LeBron James and Anthony Davis were still playing exceptional baseball and were healthy. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, that hasn’t been the case this season. And even though the Lakers haven’t made a trade this season, it’s no secret that they were pursuing Dejounte Murray, who satisfies all of their requirements for a point guard.
