The Atlanta Braves’ AA affiliate, the Mississippi Braves, will soon relocate.
The Mississippi Braves will relocate to Columbus, Georgia’s Golden Park stadium beginning in 2025, according to a Tuesday afternoon announcement made by Columbus mayor Skip Henderson.
On Christmas Eve, we had reported that Columbus was attempting to entice the Mississippi Braves with restorations to their iconic 1926 Golden Park stadium. Several minor league teams have called the location home in the past, most notably the Class A “Columbus Catfish” from 2003 to 2008.
In order to bring Golden Park up to date with Major League Baseball’s updated minor league facility standards, which were updated in 2022, the 42-page document requests design and construction services.
The MLB updates are primarily focused on providing better facilities for players and staff, such as covered pitching and hitting tunnels, appropriate areas for nutrition, and separate locker rooms for female staff members and umpires. The RFP does not specify the modifications that must be made to the ballpark. At this moment, it is unknown which areas of Golden Park are lacking.
“Must be completed by April 2025” is how the RFP puts it, and the contract will be awarded the following month.
The Mississippi Braves have verified the information, declaring on social media that they will be leaving Pearl, Mississippi, following the 2024 season.
