The Mets agreed on trading a three-time all-star to the AL West for $20 million before to the start of the coming offseason.

The New York Mets are ready to wait out at least one more season to fulfill their payroll obligations to Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer before turning their attention back to the five-year World Series schedule that owner Steve Cohen promised in 2020.

However, they will also need to make a decision in 2025 over whether to give homegrown powerhouse Pete Alonso a new contract, allow him to enter free agency, or transfer him before the 2024 deadline in order to recover some value. Erc Karaball, who wrote “bold Predictions for NL teams” for the ESPN.com fantasy baseball section, projected that the Mets would choose the latter option and trade Alonso to an AL West rival.

“But wait, Pete Alonso, the first baseman?” Karaball enquired. “In July, he is traded to the Seattle Mariners.”

Mark Vientos, a 24-year-old designated hitter and third baseman in Karaball’s hypothetical team, moves to first base and “becomes the new Alonso.” Francisco Alvarez, the catcher, contributes to the offense in part by hitting a “team-leading 31 homers.”

In order to avoid arbitration, three-time All Star Alonso inked a $20.5 million deal with the Mets before the beginning of the season.

Why Pete Alonso Could Be Traded by the New York Mets
By the end of the following season, there’s a good chance Alonso will be leaving New York. Before allowing Alonso to sign with another team, David Stearns, president of baseball operations for the Mets, might want something in return.
