The New York Mets could be open for business sooner rather than later.
The Mets, who currently sit at 24-35 and 16.5 games back of the first place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East, could be looking at a trade deadline fire sale for the second straight season.
Last year, the Mets traded right-handed pitchers Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, David Robertson, and Dominic Leone and outfielders Mark Canha and Tommy Pham in a massive sell-off right before the deadline. This year, they could find themselves in a similar spot, with even more players that opposing teams would covet.
In a recent article for USA Today, MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported the Mets haven’t yet begun trade talks surrounding their players, but will “soon shop” up to 11 names: first baseman Pete Alonso, designated hitter J.D. Martinez, infielder Jeff McNeil, outfielders Harrison Bader and Starling Marte, starting pitchers Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Jose Quintana, and relief pitchers Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman, and Reed Garrett.
