The Mets set up the process of terminating a $17.5 million contract.

Astros right-hander Justin Verlander is back on the injured list, and that could have financial implications for the Mets.

Verlander was scratched from his start on Saturday due to neck pain and was placed on the two-week IL retroactive to June 16. The earliest he could return is July 1.

Velander, 41, started the season on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and made his 2024 debut on April 19.

Before the 2023 season, he had signed a two-year deal with the Mets that included a vesting option. He was returned to Houston at last year’s trade deadline and New York agreed to pay $25 million of his salary in 2024 and half of his $35 million salary in 2025. But the Mets are only on the hook in 2025 if the option vests — which happens if Verlander throws 140 innings this season.

Through 10 starts this year, Verlander has pitched 57 innings. He needs to throw 83 more to trigger the vesting option.

If it does not vest, Verlander will become a free agent in 2025 and the Mets will not owe him anything.

Mets infielder Brett Baty is slotted in batting second and playing second base — for the second time in his career — for Tiple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Given how badly second baseman Jeff McNeil has struggled this season, it’s hard to overlook the team’s eagerness to give Baty, a third baseman, continued reps at second. Could they be grooming Baty to eventually replace McNeil?
