Following the injuries to Josh Richardson and Terry Rozier, the Miami Heat are in desperate need of additional depth in the backcourt.
After injuries to their backcourt, the Miami Heat intend to sign Delon Wright to fill the void in their ball-handling department.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Wright has consented to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards, paving the way for him to sign with the Heat after clearing waivers in the coming days.
Despite receiving less playing time this season due to the rebuilding Wizards giving priority to younger players, Wright, 31, should still be able to make an impact on a team that makes it to the playoffs.
Is Wright still able to play?
Despite getting less playing time, he is still a capable point guard who can contribute to a rotation. Wright had a fantastic 2022–23 campaign, averaging 7.4 points and 3.9 assists in 24.4 minutes per game.
He is a 6-foot-5 player who can play defense, playmaking, and steady shooting. His assist-to-turnover ratio (3.1 to 0.9) throughout his career suggests that he has good ball handling skills. This season, he’s also making 36.8% of his threes.
How Wright can assist
The Heat, who are dealing with injuries to starting point guard Terry Rozier and important reserve Josh Richardson, are in dire need of more ball handling. When Rozier returns from a right knee sprain and Richardson recovers from a dislocated right shoulder, it’s unclear when either player will be back in the starting lineup.
Wright’s responsibilities include handling the ball, creating open shots, and playing consistent defense. Due to Miami’s injuries, he will be a part of the backcourt that already includes Alondes Williams, Duncan Robinson, and Tyler Herro.
Wright will provide much-needed depth in the event of further injuries and should see a lot of playing time—possibly even starting—while Rozier and Richardson are sidelined.
