When he wrote on the Minnesota Vikings’ recent signing of former NFL gunslinger Josh McCown as the team’s newest QB coach, Jeff Risdon of Draft Wire sought to parse through the many rumours that swirl about the NFL in the days and weeks leading up to NFL free agency.
At first glance, it doesn’t appear that the Minnesota Vikings will benefit much by signing McCown. However, an idea can be developed because he was also Drake Maye’s high school head coach, a top quarterback prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft.
In his article on the recent hiring of former NFL gunslinger Josh McCown as the team’s new quarterback coach, Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon attempted to sort through the numerous rumours that are circulating in the NFL in the days and weeks preceding NFL free agency.
It doesn’t seem like signing McCown will do anything for the Minnesota Vikings. He did, however, coach Drake Maye in high school, who is a top quarterback prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft, so something could be established.
Will The Minnesota Vikings Trade Up To Get In Better Position To Select A Tier 1 QB Prospect At 2024 NFL Draft?
Even if they wanted to, the Vikings are unlikely to select Maye because they are selecting 11th overall in the 2017 draft. The top three teams on the draft board—the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots—all have a need for a quarterback, so by the time the Vikings have the opportunity to choose, Maye, Caleb Williams, and Jayden Daniels are probably gone. Once the Vikings and Kirk Cousins split ways formally, the team’s desire to acquire a quarterback in the summer will only grow.
Therefore, the Vikings need to make a deal to move up the draft board in order to improve their chances of acquiring Maye. But at this point, that’s just wild conjecture anything is possible.
