The New York Mets and Dodgers free agent J.D. Martinez reportedly reached an agreement on a one-year deal.

Martinez would benefit the Mets if he signed a contract with them. Including his bat in their lineup could make it difficult for rival teams, like the Dodgers, to plan against them.

Most likely, he would start as their everyday designated hitter, which would be a huge upgrade for them at the position. Last season, New York had a rotating cast of guys filling the designated hitter role, but they were all quite uneven.

Martinez should go to a rival team, but if he ends up in New York, Los Angeles will be considerably more vulnerable. Though things are still in flux, it appears like his free agency may be ending sooner rather than later.

From Louisiana State University, Matt graduated with a Master of Science in Sport Management in 2021. He grew up a devoted follower of the Dodgers and Lakers, having been born and reared in the Los Angeles region. His all-time favorite Dodgers player as a child was Matt Kemp.
