The New York Mets announced today that Cornerstone will be heading to free agency.

While team owner Steve Cohen reiterated his top baseball man’s remarks, president of baseball operations David Stearns pretty much confirmed earlier in camp that the New York Mets will likely take their chances by trying to re-sign Pete Alonso in free agency. Cohen made it clear to reporters in Port St. Lucie on Sunday that the best course of action for the Mets and Alonso is to let the home run-hitting first baseman put together a big season before hitting the open market the following winter.Cohen stated, “As far as Pete is concerned, I think it’s best for him to have a great year and not be distracted. We haven’t had any discussions.” It’s best for the ball club, in my opinion. We’re capable of doing this. We’ll work it out when we get there. We’ve done it with Brandon (Nimmo) and Edwin (Diaz) after the season. Cohen is referring to the Mets’ 2022–2023 offseason, when they held onto Diaz and Nimmo on big long-term contracts after they were declared free agents. The biggest contract ever signed by a closer in baseball history, valued at $102 million for five years, went to Diaz, and Nimmo signed an eight-year, $162 million deal.As was previously noted, at the beginning of spring training, Stearns was open about Alonso’s circumstances. The Mets are well aware that superstar talent usually tests the waters in free agency, as is the case with Scott Boras’s clients.”Look, when you have a really talented player, who’s really good, who’s entering his final year of club control, who happens to be represented by Scott Boras, these things generally end up into free agency and we understand that,” Stearns stated before to the start of training camp.
On Sunday, Cohen did not elaborate much on Alonso’s situation, but he did note how vital the team’s primary slugger is to the unit. He also said he hoped Alonso would make it hard for him to turn down his resignation.

Cohen states that “He’s an important part of our team today and hopefully in the future.” “I’m not tone deaf, and we know that his followers feel a lot for him. I completely comprehend why Pete’s admirers appreciate
