The New York Mets have reportedly reached to a “serious agreement to bring in third baseman to boost their offense”.

With Opening Day less than two weeks away, the New York Mets are quite willing to improve their offensive.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that the Mets and DH/third baseman J.D. Davis are having “serious talks” about a reunion.

“Top team executives met again Thursday to discuss if J.D. Davis fits their roster and 2024 agenda — and they are not doing it just as a due diligence exercise,” writes Sherman. “The right-hander, who was officially released by the Giants on Monday shortly after they acquired Matt Chapman to play third base, is someone they would really like to get back together with. The Mets have communicated with Matt Hannaford, Davis’ agent, on several occasions. In the coming days, a decision about Davis’s destination is anticipated.”

Mike Puma, a fellow New York Post journalist, also disclosed that outfielder Brandon Nimmo is fully in favor of Davis returning to Queens.

“It would be amazing to have him back; he had a great year last year,” Nimmo remarked. “He’s a great guy and someone I know very well, and I think he could definitely help us out.”

Regarded as a below-average fielder but above-average hitter, Davis is being considered as a substitute for hot cornerback prospects Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. Even with a Davis reunion, the latter two would still make the squad as the Mets want to contend for a postseason berth while also assessing their MLB-ready prospects.

Signing Davis would be a positive step toward the team’s objective of being competitive. He hit.307/.369/.527 in 2019, his first season as a Met, with 22 doubles, 22 home runs, and a 137 wRC+. As the team’s designated hitter in 2022, he was having trouble, and in a now-famous midseason deal for Darin Ruf, he was sent to the San Francisco Giants.

Davis rebounded from his 2022 season with the Giants, hitting.263/.361/.496 with a 144 wRC+ in 49 games. 2023 saw him have a dismal year at the plate, slashing.248/.325/.413, but he also had a career-high 116 games at third base, 23 doubles, and 18 home runs—his highest total since 2019.
