The New York Mets make decisions on José Buttó will move to the minors to make up their starting roster.

The New York Mets have made a crucial choice for the back end of their rotation after deciding on veteran José Quintana as their Opening Day starter.

Tylor Megill has secured a spot on the Mets’ 26-man roster, and manager Carlos Mendoza informed media on Wednesday that he would be a part of the team’s starting rotation when the regular season got underway. The Mets decided to option José Buttó to the minor leagues as a result.

During Spring Training, Megill and Buttó had been fighting for the fifth and last spot in New York’s rotation; Quintana and three significant offseason additions, Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Adrian Houser, occupied the other four spots. Kodai Senga, the projected star, is currently recovering from a shoulder injury.

Megill and Buttó both had strong performances in Grapefruit League play, so it was a tough decision. Against Megill, who went 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA, 1.021 WHIP, and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings, Buttó had a 1-0 record with a 0.90 ERA, 1.100 WHIP, and 8.1 strikeouts.

By 2020, MLB.com ranked Butto as the No. 27 prospect in the farm system of the New York Mets. Before making his major league debut, he rose to No. 17 in 2021 and No. 12 in 2022.

Pitching 46.0 innings with the Mets, Buttó has less major league experience than Megill, who has 263.1. The latter will turn 29 in July, while the former just turned 26 on Tuesday.
