The New York Mets’ Pete Alonso could rejoin the team in MLB free agency after the team purportedly announced this summer

It seems that the New York Mets reportedly have confidence that even if they trade homegrown star Pete Alonso this summer they can bring him back to the team in MLB free agency.

The Mets have dropped eight of their previous nine games and are rapidly falling in the MLB standings going into today’s games. After embarking on a lot of deals this winter, this squad did not have great expectations, yet a large portion of the roster has underperformed.

It is therefore not surprising that there has been a great deal of conjecture about the organisation regarding its potential sale before to the trading deadline of July 30. First baseman Pete Alonso is one player who opposing teams consider to be a high target.

It appears certain that the team will test his value on the trade market before he tries his own value in free agency after the season, given he and the team are no closer to ironing out a contract extension. The debate over whether or not the Mets would trade Alonso has been fueled by new information that SNY MLB source Andy Martino provided earlier this week.

According to Martino, David Stearns, the new President of Baseball Operations, had no plans to trade the three-time All-Star before to the season.

There’s a belief among Mets supporters that, should they choose to, selling Alonso for a few months won’t interfere with their attempts to re-sign him as a free agent, according to Martino. That could be difficult. But there’s a concern for later on as well.

The league insider also indicated that obtaining “needle-moving” prospects in a potential trade for Pete Alonso was not a given, so it will be intriguing to watch what the team does.
