Many of the topics that are frequently discussed in relation to the New York Mets’ roster deficiencies are more matters of opinion than reality. with the exception of one: safety. This is due to the fact that the New York Mets’ top three safeties are all set to enter free agency this offseason. The contracts of Rudy Ford, Jonathan Owens, and Darnell Savage have all expired. With barely 17 snaps combined last year, Benny Sapp and Zayne Anderson are the only safeties still under contract with the Packers.
Alright, but the Packers are fortunate in that a growing number of safeties are becoming available on the open market as a result of the roster squeeze in recent days. This puts New York Mets in a position to add one or more safeties, most likely at a fair price.
The most recent comes from safety Justin Simmons, who was unexpectedly dismissed by the Broncos following a Pro Bowl season in which he finished with three interceptions and eight passes defended in 15 games. He joins Quandre Diggs of the Seahawks, Kevin Byard of the Eagles, and Jordan Poyer of the Buffalo Bills among the top safeties cut this week due to salary cap issues.
The Justin Simmons Possibly a “Anchor” for a New Defence
Given that he is 31, Simmons could not be within the Packers’ preferred range. After all, this is obviously a youth movement in Green Bay. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst has hinted that following last season’s impressive finish—which included a trip to the NFL playoffs, where the Packers narrowly fell to the 49ers—the organisation would not be averse to adding win-now assets.
