In order to sign Pete Alonso to a four-year contract before to declaring free agency, Mets owner Steve Cohen confirmed
Superstar slugger Pete Alonso is unlikely to sign a contract extension with the New York Mets before free agency opens up in 2019, but team owner Steve Cohen has stated that the team wants to keep him around for the long run.
He’s a valuable member of our squad now and, hopefully, in the future, Cohen continued. “I’m not tone deaf, but we are aware of how passionate his admirers are about him. I now get why Pete is so beloved by his supporters.
“I hope he hits fifty-five home runs and gives me a lot of trouble in free agency. It seems like a fantastic result to me.
Since his 2019 league debut, Alonso has undoubtedly established himself as a fan favorite and a pillar of the team. During this time, he has more home runs and RBIs than any other baseball player. Since Cohen is a Mets fan himself, he is aware of the frenzied commotion that would undoubtedly ensue if Alonso were to leave Queens.
The most likely scenario, according to Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, is that Alonso will hit free agency. In that case, the organization will have to attempt to re-sign him and run the danger of losing out to a rival team in a bidding war.
“Look, when you have a really talented player, who’s really good, who’s entering his final year of club control, who happens to be represented by Scott Boras,” Stearns continued, “these things generally end up into free agency and we understand that.
The team is “certainly invested in keeping Pete a Met and I’m hopeful, over time, we’ll be able to work that out,” Stearns said in his words.
Alonso made it plain last week when he arrived to camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida, that while he is committed to baseball, he has considered being a Met for life and enjoys playing in the famous city of New York City.
“Though I can’t forecast the future, I have certainly considered and embraced the idea. I just want to concentrate on this season, personally. All I desire is to live my life to the fullest.”
Alonso claims that if the Mets approach him and his agent Scott Boras first, they are willing to discuss an extension during the regular season. Though it can be a significant distraction during the season, this rarely happens. The Mets are probably fine leaving things until free agency the next year, as seen by the fact that they haven’t discussed a possible new contract with Alonso. It is clear that Alonso, who has blossomed into a superstar, is something Cohen and the Mets want to retain.
