Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks is reportedly a trade target for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Currently in his second season with Atlanta, the 6-foot-5 guard’s name has been making the rounds in trade rumors lately. Speaking on a recent episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run it Back,” Shams Charania claimed that Murray is a desirable target to pair with LeBron James and Anthony Davis due to his upcoming four-year contract extension.
D’Angelo Russell was recently benched by the Lakers in an effort to achieve defensive balance within their starting five. In the upcoming months, Los Angeles general manager Rob Pelinka may find Murray to be an alluring prospect due to his reputation as a true point-of-attack defender who is versatile. Murray was first acquired by the Hawks to play next to Trae Young and strengthen their backcourt defense.
The Lakers would be able to get the length, ball handling, tertiary scoring, and perimeter defense that Murray offers. But Russell’s second stint with the Purple and Gold would most likely come to an end with his arrival.
Pelinka hasn’t let up in his pursuit of finding the ideal players to surround LeBron and Davis. He moved in several ways.
During the previous year’s trade deadline, he made several moves that helped the Lakers advance to the Western Conference Finals, where they were ultimately defeated by the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers could start talks in the new year if Murray is available via trade and they don’t think his asking price is too high.
The ultimate objective is to secure a championship and persuade LeBron to carry on with his career in Los Angeles. Murray can help achieve that, so it makes sense to look into every possibility.
