The Minnesota Vikings’ negotiating position with Kirk Cousins was severely weakened on Sunday afternoon when significant news broke out of Tampa Bay. The Vikings plan to allow Cousins to begin negotiations with teams during the legal tampering period of free agency at Noon on Monday, should they be unable to come to an agreement earlier.
Baker Mayfield was desired by the Minnesota Vikings in free agency.
For the past few weeks, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields have all expressed interest in the Vikings in trades. If Mayfield and the Bucs couldn’t come to an agreement, the Vikings expressed interest in signing him this week, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
There have been conflicting reports on whether the Vikings had any interest in Mayfield. However, the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons did. Because Cousins is a target for the Falcons, having Mayfield on the market would help Minnesota retain Cousins for the 2024 season.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield
Per Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, the Buccaneers signed Mayfield to a three-year deal worth $100 million, with $50 million of that guaranteed.
