The Minnesota Vikings continued to retool on both sides of the ball by adding another player via free agency.
On March 19, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report broke the news on X, saying, “Breaking: Free agent CB Shaq Griffin is signing with the #Vikings on a 1-year deal, up to $6M, sources tell @BleacherReport.”
Soon after, the team announced the signing. Craig Peters of Vikings.com highlighted Griffin’s 89 career games played, including 79 starts, in the cornerback position. Byron Murphy, a former second-round choice of the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, is leading the group at barely 26 years old.
The 28-year-old Griffin played for the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans in the previous season. In November, the Texans cut him after he had a career-low 57% snap share on defense. Prior to the previous season, he had also played in less than 18% of his team’s special teams snaps in each of his previous seasons.
Following his arrival, he played in 43% of Carolina’s special teams snaps. Griffin played for Houston on up to 57% of those snaps.
On November 29, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 noted, “Griffin was starting until former first-round draft pick Derek Stingley Jr. was activated from injured reserve.” Griffin was mainly used on special teams throughout the previous several games, and Stingley intercepted two passes.
