OKLAHOMA Sooner

The Oklahoma Sooners community is in mourning following a tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Steve Davis, a legendary quarterback for the team. Davis, who led the Sooners to back-to-back national championships in the 1970s, passed away along with his friend, businessman Wes Caves, on March 17, 2013. The crash occurred near South Bend, Indiana, when their small private jet, after multiple failed landing attempts, collided with several homes near South Bend Regional Airport.

Davis, who had a remarkable college career, was known for his leadership on the field, compiling a 32-1-1 record as the Sooners’ starting quarterback between 1972 and 1975. His athletic accomplishments were widely respected, with his career wins record holding for over three decades. Despite being away from football for years, Davis remained a beloved figure in the Oklahoma football community.

In addition to his football legacy, Davis was a man of strong faith, often sharing his testimony and inspiring others. His death has left a deep impact on those who knew him, with tributes pouring in from former coaches and teammates, including legendary figures like Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops. While his record on the field will long be remembered, it was his character and devotion to others that truly defined his legacy.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and two other passengers, Jim Rodgers and Christopher Evans, were hospitalized with injuries.
