Liverpool are looking to make Romeo Lavia their latest midfield addition before the transfer window shuts
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has outlined his concerns over his former club’s Premier League title credentials amid their pursuit of Romeo Lavia.
The Reds finished well off the pace last season after enjoying an extended period of challenging at the summit of the English top-flight. Under Jurgen Klopp, they ended their 30-year wait to win the league, and aside from that 2019-20 title success, they have regularly battled it out with Manchester City at the top.
But after their fifth-placed finish in 2022-23, a midfield overhaul was needed. James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left on free transfers, as expected. But the exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have created a potential headache for Liverpool boss Klopp and the club’s newly-appointed sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.
The Reds have cast their attention to the Southampton midfielder Lavia after a fine debut season in the Premier League. They have already had two bids for the 19-year-old Belgian rejected by the Saints.
But Nicol believes if Liverpool want to be challenging back at the upper reaches of the table, they need to sign ready-made additions as opposed to the likes of Lavia, who has made just 29 Premier League appearances in his career
“Again, this is a potential player we are talking about,” said Nicol, who won eight major honours during his 13-year stay at Anfield. “If Liverpool want to be pushing anybody for the Premier League title, the Champions League or any of the big prizes, they need somebody who is going to be playing now and who is going to do the job.
