Leeds United are reportedly keen on making a move for O’Brien who spent a chunk of last season on loan at DC United
Wayne Rooney was desperate to keep Leeds United target Lewis O’Brien at DC United this summer following the completion of his loan from Nottingham Forest. The midfielder joined the DC United last March after being left out of the Premier League club’s 25-man squad and made a strong impression as he took up a role in the side alongside ex-Whites favourite Mateusz Klich.
O’Brien went on to make 17 appearances in the MLS, scoring one goal, before returning to the City Ground over the summer. However, with competition for places within Steve Cooper’s line-up strong, he could be available for a move once more before the September 1 transfer deadline.
Leeds are one club who have been linked with the 24-year-old as they look to add much-needed depth to their midfield ranks and they might well take Rooney’s ringing endorsement into account as they ponder a potential move.
He’s been great for us,” Rooney said in July after bidding the Forest man farewell. “We’re losing a really good player, and we knew that’s what it was.
“We’re still trying to get him back and keep him here. I’m sure over the next two weeks or so we’ll have an answer from Nottingham Forest, but we’re trying in a few different ways to get him back.”
An MLS return seems unlikely at this stage but if a move to Leeds was to emerge, O’Brien might well be picking up the phone and giving Klich a call for a few words of wisdom.
